This short was made as part of a Historic Preservation effort to save one of the oldest buildings on Sunset Boulevard, the childhood home of Anna Zacsek, silent film actress with DW Griffith in “The Birth of a Nation” and “Intolerance” turned crusading civil rights lawyer in the trial of Pedro Gonzalez and the Sleepy Lagoon Murders, some of the most racially charged cases in Los Angeles of the 30’s and 40’s.
A presentation was made to the Cultural Heritage Commission in October of 2011 seeking designation as an Historic Cultural Monument. The vote was 3-2 against designation. Click here to listen to the audio from that hearing.
